Day 2
Tuesday May 25 We kick off our adventure in vibrant Munich, Germany’s third largest city and capital of Bavaria. A world renowned centre for arts and culture, it is where beer lovers from around the world gather each autumn at the famous Hofbräuhaus during Octoberfest. It is also the home of Naziism and it was here, in 1923, that Hitler attempted to overthrow the Weimar Republic. The Odeonsplatz has traditionally been an important site of parades and public events and for this reason it was chosen as the route for the Nazi protest rally on 9 November 1923 in the course of the ‘Beer Hall Putsch’. Over two thousand armed Nazis marched on the Felderrnhalle ending in a street gunfight. On the edge of the city we visit Dachau, one of the first and longest running concentration camps built by the Nazis when they swept to power in 1933. Located on the grounds of an abandoned munitions factory, its purpose was to intern the Nazi party’s political opponents but after its opening by Heinrich Himmler it was enlarged to include forced labour and eventually, the imprisonment the ‘undesirables.’ The Dachau system of work camps would eventually include nearly one hundred sub-camps located throughout Munich and southern Germany. The Munich Documentation Center for the History of National Socialism is dedicated to addressing the city’s troubled past. It was built on the site of the old ‘Brown House,’ formally known as the mansion Palais Barlow which became the headquarters for the National Socialist Workers’ Party. Overnight Munich - hotel tbc. Day 3
Wednesday May 26 Today is an optional full-day excursion to the far southeast corner of the country, into the Bavarian Alps to the idyllic mountain village of Berchtesgaden. Here top Nazi party officials created their own complex of chateaus, bunkers and garrisons. We'll tour Kehlsteinhaus, the famous alpine retreat which served as Hitler's secondary headquarters, and also visit to Berchtesgaden and a tour of the local museum and underground network of bunkers. Day 4
Thursday May 27 Today we travel to picturesque Nuremberg, home of Germany's Renaissance of the 15th and 16th centuries. The National Socialists used this area for their rallies from 1933 onward. The central venue for these events was the Zeppelin Field, earning this name after one of Count Zeppelin's airships landed here in 1909. It had a capacity of up to 200,000 people. This is where mass parades of the German Labor Service, the Wehrmacht, and Nazi Party officials were staged in front of the Führer, Adolf Hitler. The Cathedral of Light provided spectacular effects when over 150 powerful searchlights projected their beams straight up into the sky. We will also see the courthouse where the Nuremberg Trials were held between 1945 and 1949. Also included is a guided tour of the National Socialist Party Museum. It houses a permanent exhibition "Fascination and Terror" (Faszination und Gewalt), which studies the causes and consequences of National Socialism - what led to the National Socialists' criminal exercise of power. Day 5
Friday May 28 Leaving the city of Nuremberg — where the Nazi story came to its end — we make our way to Czechia and the stunning city of Prague. It is considered by many to be one of the most beautiful of Europe's capital cities, with the Old Town listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Get out your calendar as we travel back to one of the bleakest periods in this country’s history and confront one of the most ruthless Nazi leaders of them all. Discover who he was, the terror he unleashed, the courageous efforts to stop him, and the heavy price others ultimately paid. Our visit here includes a visit to the nearby town of Lidice to tell the full story. Overnight Prague - hotel tbc. [B] |

Day 6
Saturday May 29 Today features an optional morning excursion to the Terezín Memorial. Also known as the Theresienstadt Ghetto, it was established by the SS during WW2 within the medieval walls of the fortress town. The Nazis used Theresienstadt to hide the true nature of their "Final Solution" - the mass annihilation of European Jewry. It was cynically portrayed in propaganda as a spa town or retirement settlement for elderly or prominent Jews. This deception reached its peak with a staged visit by the International Red Cross in June 1944, for which the ghetto was beautified with fake shops and cultural activities to fool inspectors. Theresienstadt was known for its relatively rich cultural life, with the prisoners organizing concerts, lectures and clandestine education for children. Returning to Prague, the afternoon is free to explore the city at your leisure. You might choose to cross the Vltava River on a pedestrian bridge, visit the Prague Castle, or enjoy people-watching on the Old Town square. Overnight Prague - hotel tbc. [B] |

Day 7
Sunday May 30 We depart Prague and Czechia and travel back across the border to the Fatherland ... Dresden. Here we walk the neighbourhoods and town squares that bore the heavy burden of the Allied bombing campaign and learn more about its resilient citizens. The Dresdener rebuilt this town, and its beauty and history live on. From here, we carry onward and conclude the day in Leipzig, a deeply rich and cultured city in the heart of the Saxony region. It is the home of J.S. Bach, Mendelssohn, Wagner and more, with the Bach Museum and his grave at St. Thomas Church being popular pilgrimage sites. Overnight Leipzig - hotel tbc. [B] |

Day 8
Monday May 31 The tour departs Leipzig and we continue our journey northeast. Our first stop is the tiny town of Halbe to consider the devastating battle which took place here in February 1945. It was here where Germany's last reserves - civilians, elderly, inexperienced troops and boys as young as thirteen - were thrown against the Russian juggernaut in a futile and last-ditch effort to save the capital. We visit the graves of these fallen and walk the battlefield where the blood and spirit of all who fought and died still lives in the surrounding forest. Roughly 40,000 died here. Our journey continues to the town of Zossen and the little known but impressive bunker complex. Home to the Maybach I and II and Zeppelin communications bunker, these incredible structures were part of the communications apparatus throughout the war and the site of the planning of the invasion of Russia in June 1941. From the invasion of Poland to its capture by the Russians in 1945, the existence of this complex was never known to the Allies. It saw post-war life as a Soviet command bunker with modifications made to protect against the pending nuclear threat. Overnight Berlin - hotel tbc. [B,L] |

Day 9
Tuesday June 1 As we wind our way north and through the waning years of the war, we visit the small seaside village of Peenemünde. Home to one of the most important and potentially dangerous weapons of the Second World War, we tour the incredible V-2 Rocket facility. The brainchild of such scientific luminaries as Dr. Wernher von Braun, we see the planning, process and execution of these 'Wunderwaffe' or 'Wonder Weapons' designed to win the war. Our day concludes as we cross the border into Poland. Overnight Szczecin - hotel tbc. [B,L] |

Day 10
Wednesday June 2 Our morning takes us to the Oder River near Kostrzyn (Küstrin), Poland, following the Russian Army as we cross into Germany for the advance toward Berlin. We walk to Zhukov’s Bunker where he viewed the preparations for the final assault. Heading west, we approach the German positions on the Seelöw Heights and stand where weak and poorly supplied German forces attempted to stem the red tide. Known as the "Gates of Berlin," it was here, as part of Berlin Strategic Offensive Operation in April 1945, that nearly 1,000,000 Soviet soldiers of 1st Belorussian Front attacked approximately 110,000 soldiers of the German 9th Army in the final pitched battle for Berlin. After a light lunch we carry onward to the capital city and the final objective in World War Two. We will enjoy a further three nights in this beautiful and storied city. Overnight Berlin - hotel tbc. [B,L] |
|
Day 11
Thursday June 3 We tour various points of interest in and around Berlin today. We make our way to beautiful lake district of Wannsee and visit the chateau where Reinhard Heydrich penned the finishing touches to the 'Final Solution' to the 'Jewish Question'. Set amongst elder oak trees and the picturesque waters of Wannsee Lake, the evil activities within the chateau belied the tranquility outside. Back in the center of Berlin, we take a walking tour around Brandenburg Gate, the Reichstag and other points of interest where the 1000-year Reich came to a crashing end. Overnight Berlin - hotel tbc. [B,L] |
